All of the other projects at Alma Lights address primarily the internal structure of the building and visitors inside the building. Peter Haakon Thompson’s House Flags for Alma Lights is intended to communicate with the surrounding and passing by community outside the building.
In the maritime world, House Flags use color, shape and often letters to denote the ship-owner. They are like a semaphore heraldry. House Flags for Alma Lights represent a number of “sketches” that Thompson made over the course of the summer. While traditionally house flags identify the owner of a ship – and the Alma Lights House Flags identify this interim version of ALMA: Cafe, Restaurant and Inn – they are also an indication of occupancy and an invitation to visit the “ship” on the corner of University Avenue and 6th Street.
The final Alma Lights House Flag will be raised outside the University Avenue entrance at approximately 7 pm on Wednesday, September 18.
